Do you need travel insurance if you have an EHIC or GHIC card

Do you need travel insurance if you have an EHIC or GHIC card?

Yes — you still need travel insurance, even if you have a GHIC or EHIC card. They’re not the same thing, and relying on one without the other could leave you seriously out of pocket. Here’s why.

What is a GHIC?

The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) replaced the EHIC for UK residents after Brexit. It’s free to get through the NHS and gives you access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries — treatment that can’t wait until you get home, like accidents or sudden illness.

If you still have a valid EHIC, it works until it expires. After that, apply for a GHIC. And be careful — some third-party websites charge for GHIC applications. Applying through the NHS is free.

What does a GHIC or EHIC cover?

Both cards cover necessary medical treatment at state-run facilities in EU countries. That means emergency or urgent care at the same level as a local resident — but only in public hospitals and clinics.

What doesn’t a GHIC or EHIC cover?

This is where most people get caught out. Neither card covers:

  • Repatriation — flying you home if you’re seriously ill or injured
  • Private medical treatment — even if you’re referred there by a state hospital
  • Trip cancellation or curtailment — for any reason
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged baggage
  • Travel delays
  • Personal liability
  • Non-refundable holiday costs

A medical repatriation flight can cost tens of thousands of pounds. That won’t be covered by your GHIC.

Does the GHIC work outside the EU?

No. If you’re travelling to the USA, Canada, Australia, or anywhere outside the EU, you’ll need travel insurance regardless. The UK has reciprocal healthcare agreements with some non-EU countries, but coverage is limited and not a substitute for proper insurance.

Do you still need your GHIC if you have travel insurance?

Yes — carry both. Many travel insurance policies won’t pay out for costs that your GHIC should have covered. If you didn’t use your card and then try to claim in full, your insurer may reduce or reject the claim. They work together, not instead of each other.

Your GHIC is a good start, but it’s not enough

Your GHIC or EHIC is a useful card, but it was never designed to replace travel insurance. For full protection, including cancellation, repatriation, baggage and delays, you need a proper policy alongside it.
