What is motorhome insurance?
Motorhome insurance is a specialist type of cover that protects you and your motorhome from financial risks, whether parked at home, on a campsite or travelling on UK roads and abroad. Similar to car insurance, it’s a legal requirement in the UK to have at least third-party cover to drive your motorhome.
A comprehensive motorhome insurance policy typically includes:
- Damage from Accidents: Covering repairs for your motorhome and other vehicles involved.
- Fire and Theft: Protection if your motorhome is stolen or damaged by fire.
- Break-ins: Covering damage caused by forced entry and theft of belongings.
- Liability: Protecting you against claims from other drivers, passengers, or pedestrians.
- Personal Belongings: Some policies include cover for camping gear and valuables inside the motorhome.
Types of Cover
There are three main levels of motorhome insurance:
- Third Party: The legal minimum, covering damage or injury to others but not your motorhome.
- Third Party, Fire and Theft: Adds protection for fire damage and theft of your motorhome.
- Comprehensive: The highest level of cover, including accidental damage to your motorhome, even if you’re at fault.
There are also three main categories of use:
- Social, Domestic, and Pleasure: This type of cover is ideal for leisure and non-business use such as weekend getaways and camping trips, visiting friends and family of running personal errands.
- Commuting: If the motorhome will be used to travel to and from a single place of work, commuting cover would be required. This is less common for motorhomes but may apply to individuals using their vehicle as their primary mode of transport.
- Personal Business Use: This provides cover for a broader range of uses, including driving to business meetings, events, or other work-related locations in addition to commuting. Personal business use is essential if you use your motorhome as part of your job or for self-employed activities.
When choosing a policy, consider how you use your motorhome. Whether it’s for holidays, commuting, or occasional trips, ensure you get the right level of protection.
How much does motorhome insurance cost?
Several factors can influence the cost of a motorhome insurance policy:
Usage and mileage
How often you use your motorhome and the number of miles you drive can affect rates. Increased risk exposure for more frequent use or long trips can result in higher premiums.
Value of the motorhome
The value of your motorhome plays a role in your premium. Higher-value motorhomes generally cost more to insure since they’re more expensive to repair or replace.
Location
Your location plays a role in determining your premiums. If you live in an area with a high incidence of accidents, theft, or crime rates, you may face higher insurance rates.
Type of motorhome
The type of motorhome you own can impact your premiums. Class A motorhomes, typically larger and more luxurious, tend to have higher insurance costs compared to coachbuilt.
Driving record
Your driving record, including past accidents or motoring offences, can influence your rates. A clean driving record will typically result in lower premiums, as it indicates a lower risk.
Storage and security
Where you store your motorhome and the security measures you have in place can impact premiums. Installing anti-theft devices may help reduce your insurance costs.

Some questions that people like to ask us about motorhome insurance
Is motorhome insurance different from car insurance?
Whilst both types of cover are essentially motor insurance, motorhome insurance will usually provide specific elements of cover tailored for motorhome owners.
Will my driving licence allow me to drive a motorhome?
This depends on when you passed your driving test but you should be able to drive a motorhome or campervan without taking any special driving tests. If you passed your test before 1997 and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you’re good to drive any motorhome up to 8.250kg in weight. If you passed your test in 1997 or later and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you can drive a motorhome up to 3,500kg in weight. For large motorhomes, your licence would need to show Category C, Category CE, Category C1 or Category C1E. You can check your entitlements on the Government website.
Am I covered to travel abroad in my motorhome?
All of our policies allow you to drive in EU countries for at least 30 days a year. If you travel abroad more frequently, for longer periods of time or travel outside of EU countries, we can tailor your policy to provide extended foreign use cover.
Am I covered to drive abroad in my motorhome?
All of our policies allow you to drive in EU countries for at least 30 days a year; some extend to up to 180 days a year. If you are intending to drive abroad, you must tell us before you leave the UK. You can do that online, or call us on 0345 222 6318. We’ll then confirm the level of cover that applies to the countries in which you’re travelling.
Will I need to install any security devices to my motorhome?
We actively encourage motorhome owners to install approved safety and security devices and offer generous discounts to those owners who take safety and security seriously. However, this isn’t compulsory unless your motorhome is of particularly high value or isn’t stored in a secure location.
I’ve converted a van into a campervan myself – is that OK?
Of course, provided that it meets requirements and is registered as a motor caravan with DVLA. Unlike some other motorhome insurance providers, we won’t make you jump through hoops to provide evidence of the conversion. If your vehicle doesn’t meet DVLA’s requirements to be reclassified, take a look at our Motorhome and campervan conversions guide.
At insurd, we understand better than most that your motorhome is your pride and joy. And because you look after your motorhome like your home from home, we’re able to offer exclusive prices and extraordinary levels of cover.
