What is campervan insurance?

Campervan insurance is a specialist policy designed for converted vehicles used for leisure travel and living — covering risks that a standard car policy doesn’t address. Whether your campervan is a professional conversion, a self-build, or a classic VW, the policy needs to reflect the true value and specification of the vehicle accurately.

A key consideration for campervan owners, particularly those with self-builds or non-standard conversions, is agreed value cover. Unlike market value policies, which can depreciate over time, agreed value cover fixes the payout amount at the start of the policy. For a well-spec’d conversion that has appreciated in value, this can make a significant difference to any claim outcome.

Types of cover

There are three main levels of campervan insurance:

  1. Third Party: The minimum legal requirement, covering damage or injury to others but not your campervan.
  2. Third Party, Fire and Theft: Adds cover for fire damage and theft of your campervan.
  3. Comprehensive: The most extensive protection, including accidental damage to your campervan, even if you are at fault.

There are also three main categories of use:

  1. Social, Domestic, and Pleasure: This type of cover is ideal for non-business purposes such as weekend trips, camping, visiting family and friends, or running personal errands.
  2. Commuting: Required if you use your campervan to travel to and from a single workplace. Though less common for campervans, it applies to those using the vehicle as a primary mode of transport.
  3. Personal Business Use: Provides cover for broader activities, such as driving to business meetings or events. This is crucial if you use your campervan for self-employment or work-related purposes in addition to commuting.

When selecting a policy, think about how you plan to use your campervan. Whether it’s for holidays, daily commutes, or occasional outings, make sure you choose the appropriate level of cover.

What you’ll need to get the best campervan insurance prices

Our mission is to give you the best campervan insurance deal in the shortest possible time. But we’ll need some information from you to make sure we’re giving you an accurate price.

Your personal information (which is 100% secure)

Apart from the obvious reasons, we’ll need your name, address and date of birth to make sure you are who you say you are. Insurance application fraud is at its highest ever level and our background checks ensure everybody pays a fair price.

Your vehicle registration number and details

We’ll search DVLA and SMMT data to ensure we’ve got accurate information about your campervan.

Your driving licence number and details of your driving history

Providing your driving licence number (“DLN”) allows for validation of your entitlement to drive certain types of vehicles and your driving history. Some of our insurer partners will offer a discount for confirming your DLN.

Details of any No Claims Bonus you’ve earned

If you’ve been insured as a campervan driver previously and are accident-free, the chances are you’ve got a No Claims Bonus (“NCB”). Your NCB will usually reduce your premium by 30-70%, so it’s important you know exactly how many years’ entitlement you have.

Full details of any additional drivers you want to drive your vehicle

You’ll need to provide the same information about any other drivers, and you should have their permission to do so before you get a quote.

How to reduce your campervan insurance premium

Beyond the factors above, there are several practical steps that can help lower your campervan insurance costs.

  • Build and protect your No Claims Bonus — A claim-free history is your most effective discount. NCB protection is worth considering once you’ve built up several years without a claim.
  • Declare modifications accurately — Self-builds and conversions must be declared accurately. Undeclared modifications can invalidate a claim — but accurately declared, well-built conversions don’t necessarily push premiums up significantly.
  • Install approved security devices — Thatcham-approved alarms, trackers, and immobilisers reduce theft risk in the eyes of insurers. For campervan conversions, a Slagle lock or deadlock on the habitation door is also worth considering.
  • Store securely when not in use — A locked garage, driveway, or CaSSOA-approved storage facility reduces your risk profile significantly compared to on-street parking.
  • Consider agreed value cover — Particularly important for well-spec’d conversions and classic campervans where market value policies may not reflect the true cost of replacement. Agreed value removes that uncertainty.
  • Review mileage and usage — If your campervan is used seasonally or for leisure only, accurate mileage declarations ensure you’re not paying for risk you don’t carry.

Yes — it's a legal requirement to have at least third-party insurance on your campervan unless it's declared SORN and off the road. In practice, specialist comprehensive campervan cover is strongly recommended, as a standard car or van policy won't cover the specific risks that come with campervan ownership.

Whilst both are essentially motor insurance, campervan insurance provides specific elements of cover tailored for campervan owners — such as awnings, personal belongings, and gas explosion cover — that a standard car policy simply won't include.

Technically, most campervans under 3,500kg can be driven on a standard car licence, and some car policies may provide basic cover. However, we'd never recommend it — your campervan has been modified for a specific purpose and needs specialist cover to protect everything from the conversion and contents to awnings and gas equipment. A standard car policy simply won't cover these risks.

This depends on when you passed your driving test, but you should be able to drive a motorhome or campervan without taking any special driving tests. If you passed your test before 1997 and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you’re good to drive any motorhome up to 8.250kg in weight. If you passed your test in 1997 or later and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you can drive a motorhome up to 3,500kg in weight. For large motorhomes, your licence would need to show Category C, Category CE, Category C1 or Category C1E. If you're 70 or over, you'll need to renew your driving licence every three years. It's a straightforward process but worth keeping on top of — driving with an expired licence could invalidate your insurance. You can check your entitlements and renew your licence on the Government website.

Yes. All of our policies allow you to drive in EU countries for at least 30 days a year; with some policies extending to up to 180 days a year. If you're planning to travel abroad, you must tell us before you leave the UK — you can do that online, or call us on 0345 222 6318. We'll confirm the level of cover that applies to the countries you're visiting.

If you travel abroad more frequently, for longer periods of time or travel outside of EU countries, we can tailor your policy to provide extended foreign use cover.

We actively encourage campervan owners to install approved security devices and offer generous discounts to those who do. It isn't compulsory for most vehicles, but if your campervan is of particularly high value or isn't stored in a secure location, your insurer may require it. If you have a tracker fitted, make sure your subscription is kept active — a lapse could affect any claim.

Most of our policies include cover for personal effects and belongings kept inside your campervan, up to a set limit. High-value items may have individual limits or exclusions — check your policy documents or speak to our team for full details.

Of course — provided it's registered as a motor caravan with the DVLA, we can arrange cover. If your vehicle doesn't currently meet DVLA's requirements to be reclassified, take a look at our motorhome and campervan conversions guide for more information, or give our team a call. For more information, or give our team a call on 0345 222 6318.
