What is touring caravan insurance?
Firstly, is caravan insurance a legal requirement? No, it’s not mandatory by law to have insurance for your caravan. However, before you breathe a sigh of relief, consider this. While it might not be legally required, it could be financially prudent and practically essential.
Read our Do you have to insure a caravan blog for more details on this.
Types of Cover
There are two levels of touring caravan insurance available, depending on the level of coverage you require.
- New for old cover: This option allows you to claim for a brand-new caravan if yours is stolen or written off in an accident. It also provides cover for any belongings stored in your caravan.
- Market value cover: This option pays out following theft or an accident, but the amount is limited to your caravan’s current market value. If you need to replace your caravan after a write-off, you may need to cover part of the cost yourself. This is generally the more affordable option.
Your car insurance policy may include third-party cover for towing a caravan. This means it covers third-party claims for injury or property damage in an accident but does not cover damage to your caravan itself.
Your home contents insurance might cover certain items like camping equipment if listed in your policy. However, it usually excludes items kept permanently in your caravan, such as fixtures and electrical goods.
What is a touring caravan?
Touring caravans are towed by a vehicle, unlike static caravans, which are permanent structures typically located on caravan sites with amenities like shops and cafes.
Touring caravans are also different from motorhomes. While both have living spaces, caravans are towed, whereas motorhomes are driven.
Since motorhomes include an engine and cab, they are classified as vehicles, requiring specialist motor insurance.
How much does touring caravan insurance cost?
Several factors can influence the cost of a touring caravan insurance policy:
Usage and storage
How often you use your caravan and where you store it when not in use can affect costs. Caravans stored in secure facilities or with added security may have lower premiums.
Value of the touring caravan
The value of your caravan is a significant factor in calculating insurance premiums. Generally, the more expensive your caravan, the higher the insurance premium will be.
Location
Where you live and where you plan to travel with your caravan can impact insurance premiums. Areas with higher rates of theft or vandalism may have higher insurance costs.
Type of touring caravan
Different types of touring caravans have varying insurance premiums. For example, a tourer, pop-top, and trailer tents may have different risk profiles, impacting their insurance costs.
Driving record
Just like with car insurance, your driving history can influence premiums. A clean driving record may result in lower premiums, while a history of accidents or claims could increase costs.
Security measures
Security features such as alarms, wheel clamps, hitch locks, and tracking devices can reduce the risk of theft or damage, thus potentially lowering insurance premiums.

Frequently asked questions about touring caravan insurance
Will my driving licence allow me to tow a caravan?
This depends on when you passed your driving test but you should be able to tow a caravan without taking any special driving tests. If you passed your test before 1997 and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you can tow any caravan up to 3,500kg MAM in weight. If you passed your test in 1997 or later and your licence shows a Category BE entitlement, you can tow a caravan up to 3,500kg MAM in weight. For larger caravans, your licence would need to show Category C, Category CE, Category C1 or Category C1E. You can check your entitlements on the Government website.
Am I covered to travel abroad with my caravan?
Yes, you are. We provide cover for towing your caravan in Europe for up to 90 days in any one year.
I live in my caravan – am I still covered?
We’re afraid not. We’re able to offer low prices because we only provide cover for caravan owners who have a permanent address and use the caravan for holiday purposes.
Where do I find my CRiS or VIN number?
For touring caravans made before 1992, the VIN or chassis number is typically located on a plate on the ‘A’ frame or near the door.
For caravans produced after 1992, you can also find a 17-digit identification number etched on the windows, known as the CRiS number, in addition to the locations mentioned above.
Would I be allowed to hire my caravan out to other people?
No, we’re unable to offer cover if you let or hire your touring caravan to anybody else.
Who will I actually be insured with?
We work in partnership with a panel of UK insurers and will arrange cover with an insurer whose policy best matches your needs. All of our insurer partners are rated by financial rating agencies and we continually monitor the financial strength of our partners.
Will I need to install any security devices to my caravan?
We only insist on a proprietary hitchlock and a wheel clamp being operative when the caravan is left unattended. However, we actively encourage caravan owners to install approved safety and security devices and offer generous discounts to those owners who take safety and security seriously.
Can I trust you?
We’ve been around for over 50 years so we know a thing or two about caravan insurance. We’re also authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
At insurd, we understand better than most that your caravan is your pride and joy. And because you look after your caravan like your home from home, we’re able to offer exclusive prices and extraordinary levels of cover.
