Touring caravan insurance for worry-free trips
Touring caravan insurance from a panel of trusted UK insurers
A new way to insure your touring caravan
Whether you own a standard tourer, a folding camper, a trailer tent, or a specialist 5th wheeler, touring caravan insurance gives you the dedicated protection that standard car insurance simply can’t provide. Your car policy may cover basic third-party liability while towing, but it won’t protect the caravan itself, your contents, or your personal belongings inside.
At insurd, we’re an FCA-regulated specialist insurance broker with over 50 years of experience arranging touring caravan insurance across the UK. We work with a panel of leading UK insurers to find the right policy for your caravan type and how you use it.

* Subject to your chosen level of policy cover and the prevailing policy excess.
What is touring caravan insurance?
Touring caravan insurance is a specialist policy designed to protect your caravan, its contents, and your liability whether you’re towing, pitched on a site, or storing it at home. Unlike your car insurance — which may provide basic third-party cover while towing — a dedicated caravan policy covers the caravan itself against accidental damage, theft, fire, weather damage, and recovery costs.
The two main types of cover available are new for old and market value. New for old replaces your caravan with a brand new equivalent if it’s written off — better value for newer caravans. Market value pays the current depreciated value of the caravan — typically more cost-effective for older models.
Types of cover
There are two levels of touring caravan insurance available, depending on the level of coverage you require.
- New for old cover: This option allows you to claim for a brand-new caravan if yours is stolen or written off in an accident. It also provides cover for any belongings stored in your caravan.
- Market value cover: This option pays out following theft or an accident, but the amount is limited to your caravan’s current market value. If you need to replace your caravan after a write-off, you may need to cover part of the cost yourself. This is generally the more affordable option.
Your car insurance policy may include third-party cover for towing a caravan. This means it covers third-party claims for injury or property damage in an accident but does not cover damage to your caravan itself.
Your home contents insurance might cover certain items like camping equipment if listed in your policy. However, it usually excludes items kept permanently in your caravan, such as fixtures and electrical goods.
What is a touring caravan?
Touring caravans are towed by a vehicle, unlike static caravans, which are permanent structures typically located on caravan sites with amenities like shops and cafes.
Touring caravans are also different from motorhomes. While both have living spaces, caravans are towed, whereas motorhomes are driven.
Since motorhomes include an engine and cab, they are classified as vehicles, requiring specialist motor insurance.
What type of caravans can you insure?
Folding camper insurance
Canvas-sided folding campers that provide spacious accommodation once set up. Our policies can cover both the rigid base and soft fabric elements for peace of mind on every trip.
Folding caravan insurance
Hard-sided folding caravans that collapse for easier towing and storage. We provide insurance suited to their innovative design and mechanical folding systems.
Trailer tent insurance
Lightweight, towable tents that unfold into sleeping and living areas. Despite their simplicity, trailer tents still benefit from dedicated cover against damage, theft, and weather-related risks.
Tourer insurance
Standard touring caravans are designed to be towed by a car or van. Whether used for weekend breaks or extended holidays, we can cover a wide range of single and twin-axle tourers from leading manufacturers.
Micro caravan insurance
Compact, lightweight caravans that offer simple sleeping and storage solutions. Ideal for minimalist travel, micro caravans still need specialist cover to protect against theft, damage, and accidents.
Pop Top insurance
Caravans fitted with a pop-up roof to increase headroom and living space when pitched. We offer cover tailored to pop-top designs, including protection for the lifting roof mechanism.
5th Wheeler RV insurance
Large, American-style caravans that connect to a pickup truck via a fifth-wheel coupling. These caravans require specialist insurance due to their size, value, and unique towing setup.
How much does touring caravan insurance cost?
Several factors can influence the cost of a touring caravan insurance policy:
Usage and storage
How often you use your caravan and where you store it when not in use both affect your premium. CaSSOA-approved secure storage attracts lower rates than on-street or unprotected storage.
Value of the touring caravan
The declared value of your caravan directly affects your premium. New for old cover is priced differently to market value cover — choosing the right option for your caravan’s age and value keeps your premium proportionate.
Location
Where you live and where you travel with your caravan can affect your premium. Areas with higher rates of theft or vandalism carry higher costs — and travelling abroad requires advance notification to confirm your cover.
Type of touring caravan
Different caravan types carry different risk profiles. A standard single-axle tourer is assessed differently to a twin-axle tourer, 5th wheeler, or folding camper — each has its own underwriting considerations.
Driving record
A clean driving record and No Claims Bonus can reduce your premium by 30–70%. Previous claims or motoring offences will increase costs.
Security measures
A Thatcham-approved hitchlock, wheel clamp, alarm, and tracker are the most impactful security measures. Many insurers require a hitchlock and wheel clamp as a minimum policy condition.
How to reduce your touring caravan insurance premium
Beyond the factors above, there are several practical steps that can help lower your touring caravan insurance costs.
- Install approved security devices — A Thatcham-approved hitchlock, wheel clamp, alarm, and tracker are the four most impactful security measures for reducing your premium. Many insurers require at minimum a hitchlock and wheel clamp as a policy condition.
- Use CaSSOA-approved storage — Where you store your caravan when not in use is one of the biggest cost factors. A CaSSOA Gold- or Silver-rated storage facility offers the highest level of security and can attract meaningful premium discounts.
- Register your caravan on CRiS — All caravans produced after 1992 have a CRiS number. Keeping your registration up to date makes your caravan easier to trace if stolen and is viewed positively by insurers.
- Choose new for old cover carefully — New for old cover replaces your caravan with a new equivalent if it’s written off. For newer caravans it’s often worth the additional premium — for older caravans, market value cover may be more cost-effective.
- Build your No Claims Bonus — Avoiding small claims and building a claim-free history reduces your premium over time. NCB protection is worth adding once you’ve accumulated several years without a claim.
- Pay annually — Monthly payments include finance interest. Paying your full annual premium upfront avoids that additional cost.
What you’ll need to get the best touring caravan insurance prices
Our mission is to give you the best touring caravan insurance deal in the shortest possible time. But we’ll need some information from you to make sure we’re giving you an accurate price.
Your personal information (which is 100% secure)
Apart from the obvious reasons, we’ll need your name, address and date of birth to make sure you are who you say you are. Insurance application fraud is at its highest ever level and our background checks ensure everybody pays a fair price.
Your touring caravan details
We’ll use DVLA and industry databases where available to confirm key information about your caravan, including the make, model, year of manufacture, and CRiS number (if registered).
Storage and security details
Let us know where your caravan is kept when not in use, for example, at home, in a storage facility, or on a seasonal pitch. We’ll also ask about any security features like wheel clamps, hitch locks, alarms, or trackers, as these may help reduce your premium.
Details of any No Claims Bonus you’ve earned
If you’ve been insured as a caravan owner previously and are claims-free, the chances are you’ve got a No Claims Bonus (“NCB”). Your NCB will usually reduce your premium by 30-70%, so it’s important you know exactly how many years’ entitlement you have.
Touring caravan insurance frequently asked questions
Is caravan insurance a legal requirement?
Caravan insurance isn't a legal requirement in the UK, but it's strongly advisable. Your car insurance may provide basic third-party cover while towing, but it won't cover damage to the caravan itself, theft, or your personal belongings inside. Given the value of most touring caravans, specialist cover is well worth it. Read our Do you have to insure a caravan blog for more detail.
Does my car insurance cover my caravan?
Your car insurance may include third-party cover for towing a caravan, which means it covers injury or damage you cause to others. However, it won't cover damage to the caravan itself, theft, or your contents. A dedicated touring caravan policy fills those gaps and gives you proper peace of mind.
Will my driving licence allow me to tow a caravan?
This depends on when you passed your driving test but you should be able to tow a caravan without taking any special driving tests. If you passed your test before 1997 and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you can tow any caravan up to 3,500kg MAM in weight. If you passed your test in 1997 or later and your licence shows a Category BE entitlement, you can tow a caravan up to 3,500kg MAM in weight. For larger caravans, your licence would need to show Category C, Category CE, Category C1 or Category C1E. If you're 70 or over, you'll need to renew your driving licence every three years. It's a straightforward process but worth keeping on top of — driving with an expired licence could invalidate your insurance. You can check your entitlements and renew your licence on the Government website.
Am I covered to travel abroad with my caravan?
Yes — we provide cover for towing your caravan in Europe for up to 90 days in any one year. If you're planning to travel abroad, let us know before you leave the UK and we'll confirm the level of cover that applies to the countries you're visiting.
What is a CRiS number and do I need one?
CRiS stands for Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme. It's a unique 17-digit number etched onto the windows of caravans produced after 1992, which helps to identify your caravan and deter theft. For caravans made before 1992, you'll have a VIN or chassis number on a plate near the A-frame or door. We'll need this number when arranging your policy.
Where do I find my CRiS or VIN number?
For touring caravans made before 1992, the VIN or chassis number is typically located on a plate on the ‘A’ frame or near the door.
For caravans produced after 1992, you can also find a 17-digit identification number etched on the windows, known as the CRiS number, in addition to the locations mentioned above.
Not sure if your caravan needs an MOT? Read our guide to caravan MOT requirements.
Will I need to install any security devices to my caravan?
We require a hitchlock and wheel clamp to be in use whenever your caravan is left unattended. Beyond that, we actively encourage owners to install additional approved security devices and offer generous discounts to those who do — a tracker with an active subscription can make a real difference to your premium.
Would I be allowed to hire my caravan out to other people?
No, we're unable to offer cover if you let or hire your touring caravan to anybody else. If you're looking to hire out your caravan commercially, you'd need a specialist hire policy — our team can point you in the right direction.
