What to do if you’re involved in an accident

We really hope 2024 is a year for trouble-free driving, but accidents do happen. Follow our handy guide to keep those nasty bumps stress-free.

Firstly, if you are involved in a road traffic accident, however minor, it’s really important that you tell us immediately. Not only is this a requirement of your policy, but the sooner we know about it, the more chance we have of keeping costs to a minimum and continuing to offer competitive prices.

24-HOUR CLAIMS HELPLINE

When you call us, we’ll deal with your claim and claims made against you as quickly, transparently and as fairly as possible.

Regardless of who was at fault, please follow these steps:

Stop

Stop as soon as it is safe to do so. If you have a warning triangle, place it before the accident to warn other drivers.

Get safe

Make sure you move to a safe place. Don’t stay in your vehicle if you are on a motorway or a busy road.

Call the authorities

If anybody has been injured, call 999 and tell the police or ambulance service.

Take pictures

If you have your mobile phone with you, try and take photographs of the scene, including the positions of the vehicles and any damage.

Talk to the other party

Remember that the other party didn’t want to be involved in a crash either, so try to remain calm and ask them for their details.

Collect their details

Make sure you get their registration number, name, address and contact number as a minimum.

Additional information

It isn’t easy to remember everything after an accident, so try to make a note of the number of passengers in each vehicle, the name and address of anybody who is injured and the contact details of anybody who witnessed the accident.

Ask the other party to call our claims helpline

By doing this, you’ll give the other party an opportunity to get our help with any repairs and we’ll also try and arrange a courtesy vehicle for them, as well as you.

Don’t admit responsibility

It’s important that you don’t admit responsibility either verbally or in writing. Instead, get the other person to call our claims helpline and we’ll sort things like that.
