What is minibus insurance?
Minibus insurance is a specialised form of vehicle cover designed for minibuses that carry multiple passengers. It provides financial protection against the unique risks associated with transporting groups of people, ensuring that both driver and passengers are covered in the event of accidents, damage, or unforeseen incidents.
Anyone operating a minibus to carry passengers, whether for commercial gain, educational institutions, charities, or community groups, is legally required to have appropriate minibus insurance. This includes both paid and non-profit transport operators using vehicles with between 9 and 16 passenger seats.
Types of cover
Minibus insurance policies usually offer the following levels of cover:
- Third Party: This is the minimum legal requirement and covers injury to other people and damage to third-party property.
- Third Party, Fire and Theft: Adds protection for your minibus in the event it is stolen or damaged by fire, on top of the third-party cover.
- Comprehensive: This offers the highest level of protection, including all third-party, fire and theft benefits, plus cover for damage to your own vehicle caused by accidents or vandalism.

How much does minibus insurance cost?
Minibus insurance is generally more expensive than standard car insurance due to the higher risk associated with carrying multiple passengers. Several factors can influence your policy cost:
Usage and mileage
Frequent use and longer distances increase the chances of incidents, leading to higher premiums. Giving accurate estimates of your typical usage helps tailor the policy to your needs.
Value of the vehicle
More expensive or specially adapted minibuses (e.g., wheelchair accessible models) may carry higher repair costs, affecting your premium. Insurers take into account the value and any modifications made to the minibus.
Location
Operating in areas with high traffic volumes or crime rates can lead to increased premiums. Insurers assess your operating region’s risk level using local crime stats and accident data.
Type of minibus
The size and capacity of the minibus, as well as how it’s used (e.g., school runs, airport transfers, charity work), can impact the cost of insurance. More seats generally mean a higher potential liability, affecting premiums.
Driving record
A clean driving record generally results in lower premiums, while a history of accidents or driving violations can increase costs. Insurers use your driving history to predict the likelihood of future claims.
Storage and security
Where and how your minibus is stored can also affect the cost. Keeping the vehicle in a locked garage or fitting it with approved security devices such as alarms, trackers, or immobilisers can lead to premium discounts.
Opting for a higher excess can reduce your premium but means you’ll pay more if you need to make a claim, whereas a lower excess increases your premium but reduces your out-of-pocket expenses. Adding optional extras to your policy will increase the cost but offer greater protection, so it’s important to weigh up your risks and budget before deciding.
