Average taxi insurance quote by licensing authority
The chart shows the five lowest, the middle five and the five highest average annual quotes among the authorities featured. Across the 100 most-quoted authorities, the five dearest averaged 3.2 times the five cheapest.
- London is among the higher-quote areas. Drivers licensed by the Public Carriage Office averaged £4,588, the fifth highest of the 100 authorities and about 44% above the £3,189 average for all drivers.
- Drivers don’t always work in the area that licensed them. Some licensing authorities license large numbers of drivers who live and work elsewhere, so these averages reflect the drivers quoting for each licence, not just local conditions. Authorities like these are included in our figures but not shown individually in the charts.

No licensing authority matches your search. Only the 100 most-quoted authorities are listed.
Only the 100 most-quoted licensing authorities are listed. Authorities that license many drivers who work elsewhere are included. One authority with an unusually high average was excluded (see how we worked this out). An average quote is not a price: your own quote depends on you, your vehicle and your cover.
What actually sets your taxi insurance price
Where you are licensed is not the whole story. Insurers look at a long list of factors, including the eight shown here.
“These figures show how much taxi insurance quotes can vary across the UK. Location plays a big part, meaning where you live and where the taxi is kept overnight, but insurers also weigh who is driving, how far they drive and the taxi itself. When quotes can differ this much, comparing a wide panel matters. We work with some of the top-rated insurers, including Admiral, KinetiQ, Q, Inshur, KGM, Eridge, Collingwood, Markerstudy, SEIB, Sabre, Trident and ERS. We search them for each driver, and this summer 8 different insurers on our panel were the cheapest option for at least one driver.”

Quotes vary a lot, so comparing insurers on our panel matters.

Factors that affect taxi insurance quotes.
How we worked this out
- The data: insurd quote data for summer 2026 (July to September): more than 100,000 taxi and private hire insurance quotes across 370 licensing authorities, provided by insurers on insurd’s panel.
- What we measure: the average annual quote for each licensing authority, across all quotes received. These are quotes, not policies sold.
- Which authorities: the 100 most-quoted, which together make up 88% of all quotes. Public service vehicle (bus and coach) quotes are excluded. One authority with an unusually high average, more than a third above the next highest, was excluded and the next most-quoted authority included in its place.
- The headline gap: the average of the five cheapest compared with the average of the five dearest of those 100 authorities.
- No Claims Bonus figures: averages for drivers with at least four years’ No Claims Bonus. The national figure covers all authorities. The authority-by-authority comparison covers the 15 authorities shown.
- Drivers who work elsewhere: authorities that license many drivers who live and work elsewhere are included in every figure, but are not highlighted individually in the charts.
- Rounding: figures are rounded to the nearest pound.
Frequently asked questions
How much does taxi insurance cost?
It varies widely. The average annual quote across all the quotes in our summer 2026 data was £3,189. For drivers with at least four years' No Claims Bonus it was £2,166. By licensing authority, the five cheapest of the 100 most-quoted authorities averaged £1,519 and the five dearest £4,929. Your own quote depends on many factors.
Does my licensing authority affect my taxi insurance price?
Average quotes differ a lot between licensing authorities, but your own quote depends on many factors, not just where you are licensed. Location plays a big part, meaning where you live and where the taxi is kept overnight. Insurers also weigh who is driving (for example age and driving experience, claims and points, and No Claims Bonus), how far they drive each year, and the taxi itself, including its type, age and value.
Why are average quotes higher in some areas?
Averages reflect the drivers quoting as well as the area. Age, No Claims Bonus, mileage and the vehicle all vary between authorities, and some licensing authorities license large numbers of drivers who live and work elsewhere. We haven't tried to pin the gap on one cause.
What is the difference between an average quote and what I will pay?
An average quote is the average of the quotes we received from insurers on our panel for drivers licensed by an authority. It is not a price list and not a guarantee. Your quote depends on you, your vehicle and the cover you choose.
How much lower are quotes for drivers with a No Claims Bonus?
Drivers with at least four years' No Claims Bonus averaged £2,166 in summer 2026, about a third (£1,023) lower than the £3,189 average for all drivers. That is an average across many drivers, not what any one driver will be quoted.
How can I make sure I am getting a competitive taxi insurance quote?
Quotes can differ a lot between insurers, so compare more than one. Check that your mileage, vehicle and personal details are accurate, because they all affect the quote.
