Get your impounded vehicle released today
Having your vehicle seized by the police is stressful enough. The last thing you need is to find out your existing insurance won’t let you get it back.
Standard annual car insurance policies, and many short-term policies, do not explicitly permit the release of a vehicle from a police compound. Without the right cover in place, the pound won’t release your vehicle, no matter how comprehensive your usual policy is.
Impound insurance, also known as impounded vehicle release insurance, is the only policy specifically underwritten to satisfy a compound’s release requirements.
At insurd, we’re an FCA-regulated specialist insurance broker with over 50 years of experience. For impound cover, we work with GoShorty — one of the UK’s leading short-term vehicle insurance specialists.

Cover for cars, vans, and more
Whether it’s your car, van, luton, pickup, motorhome or campervan that’s been seized, an impound policy covers a wide range of vehicle types.
Drivers with points considered
You don’t need a clean licence to apply. Drivers with up to 9 penalty points in the last 5 years may still be eligible — and recent claims are also considered.
What does impound insurance cover?
Release from a police compound
The policy explicitly permits the release of a seized vehicle from a police compound — the specific permission that standard insurance policies often exclude.
Third party liability
Covers legal liability for injury to other people and damage to third-party property. The legal minimum required to drive on UK roads.*
Social, domestic and pleasure use
Covers you for everyday driving once your vehicle is released and back on the road.*
Commuting
The policy includes commuting use, so you can drive to and from work while your cover is active.*
EU, EEA and Switzerland travel
Third party cover is included for travel in EU, EEA member states and Switzerland.*
What isn’t covered? Business or commercial use is not included. The policy does not cover damage to your own vehicle — this is third party only cover.
* Subject to your chosen level of policy cover and GoShorty’s policy terms and conditions.
What vehicles can be covered?
Impounded car insurance
If your car has been seized by the police, impounded car insurance gives you the specific cover you need to secure its release. Whether your car was taken due to driving without insurance, unpaid road tax, or another reason, you must present proof of valid insurance before the pound will release it.
Impounded car insurance through insurd covers cars registered in the UK, with no minimum or maximum vehicle value.
Impounded van insurance
Van drivers whose vehicle has been seized can also get impounded van insurance. The same policy applies, covering third party liability to get your van released from the compound. Eligible van types include standard panel vans, box vans, Luton vans, refrigerated vans and pickup trucks.
Other impounded vehicles
Cover is also available for motor caravans. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is eligible, enter your reg in the quote tool above, it will confirm eligibility based on your vehicle details.
What is impound insurance and why do you need it?
When the police seize a vehicle — whether for driving without insurance, no valid road tax, illegal parking, or other reasons — it is taken to a police compound (sometimes called a police pound). To secure its release, you are legally required to present valid insurance that explicitly permits the release of a vehicle from a compound.
This is a critical distinction. Many motorists assume their existing annual insurance policy covers this situation — it often does not. The terms and conditions of most standard policies include limitations that prevent them from being used for impound release. Even a recently purchased temporary or short-term policy may not include the specific permission required.
Impound insurance — which is also often called impounded vehicle release insurance — is a standalone policy bought solely for this purpose. It satisfies the compound’s insurance requirement, enabling you to pay the release fee and storage costs and take your vehicle home.
The 7-day window: Once your vehicle is seized, you typically have 7 days to reclaim it before additional penalties apply or the vehicle may be disposed of. Daily storage charges accumulate quickly. Acting fast is essential.
Compound release insurance vs standard insurance: Standard annual and short-term insurance policies are not designed to permit impound release. Impound insurance is specifically underwritten to include this permission — it is the only policy type that will be accepted at most compounds.
Do you need impound or temporary insurance?
They’re often confused, but they’re very different products. Here’s how to tell which one you need.
You need impound insurance — if your vehicle has been seized by the police and is being held at a compound. Standard and short-term insurance policies will not be accepted. You need a specialist 30-day policy that explicitly permits compound release.
You need temporary insurance — if your vehicle hasn’t been seized and you simply need short-term cover, whether you’re borrowing a car, driving a new purchase home, or covering a gap in your annual policy. We offer the following temporary options:
- Temporary car insurance — fully comprehensive short-term cover for cars from 1 hour to 28 days, with no impact on your existing no-claims bonus.
- Temporary van insurance — fully comprehensive short-term cover for vans from 1 hour to 28 days, including business use and carriage of own goods.
- Temporary motorhome insurance — flexible short-term cover for motorhomes, ideal for holidays, one-off trips or seasonal use.
- Temporary campervan insurance — short-term cover for campervans from 1 to 28 days.
Once your vehicle has been released, you’ll need to arrange ongoing cover to stay on the road. insurd arranges car insurance and van insurance.
What you’ll need to release your vehicle from the impound
Before you head to the compound, make sure you have everything on this list. The pound will not release your vehicle without the full set of documents — and charges continue to accumulate while you make additional trips.
Your seizure notice
This is the document given to you by the police at the time your vehicle was taken. It contains the details of where your vehicle is being held and the reason for seizure. You cannot release your vehicle without this.
Your driving licence
You’ll need your full UK driving licence to present at the compound. You must be the registered keeper of the vehicle.
Proof of address
A bank statement or utility bill confirming your current address. Must match the address on your insurance documents.
Proof of vehicle ownership, MOT and road tax
You’ll need your V5C logbook to confirm you are the registered keeper of the vehicle, as well as valid road tax and an MOT for the vehicle. You can check and pay your road tax at Gov.uk. If your MOT has lapsed, proof of a pre-booked appointment will be accepted.
Your impound insurance documents
Once you complete your quote and payment, your policy documents are emailed immediately. These will explicitly state that the policy permits release from a police compound — this is the key document the pound requires.
How much does impound insurance cost?
The cost of impound insurance varies depending on your personal circumstances, driving history, and the vehicle involved. Because it’s a specialist product with a specific risk profile, it is priced differently to standard annual or temporary car insurance.
Factors that influence the price include:
- Your age — drivers must be between 21 and 75
- Your driving history and any penalty points on your licence
- The make, model and value of your vehicle.
- Whether you have made recent motor insurance claims
The most accurate way to find out your price is to complete a quote through the tool above. The quote journey takes under 2 minutes, and your documents are delivered immediately after payment.

Impound insurance frequently asked questions
What is impound insurance?
Impound insurance — also called impounded vehicle release insurance or compound release insurance — is a specialist 30-day third party only motor insurance policy. It is specifically underwritten to permit the release of a seized vehicle from a police compound. Your standard annual or temporary insurance policy will not be accepted for this purpose.
Why was my vehicle impounded?
Vehicles are typically seized by the police for one of the following reasons: driving without valid insurance, no valid road tax, driving without a licence, no valid MOT, unsafe or anti-social driving, or causing an obstruction. Contact the compound directly to confirm the specific reason your vehicle was taken, as this can affect the release process.
Why won't my existing insurance cover impound release?
Most standard motor insurance policies — whether annual or short-term — do not include the specific permission required to release a vehicle from a police compound. Impound insurance is the only policy type specifically underwritten to include this permission. Even a recently purchased temporary policy will not be accepted.
Is 30-day cover mandatory for impound release?
Yes. Police compounds require a minimum of 30 days of insurance cover before they will release a vehicle. Standard one-day or short-term temporary policies do not satisfy this requirement. The GoShorty policy arranged through insurd is a fixed 30-day policy accepted at compounds nationwide.
How quickly can I get impound insurance?
Immediately. Once your quote is completed and payment made, your policy documents are emailed to you straight away. The GoShorty quote journey takes under 2 minutes. You can be at the compound the same day.
How long do I have to collect my vehicle from the pound?
You typically have 7 days to present proof of valid insurance to the compound, and up to 14 days to physically collect the vehicle. Daily storage charges begin accumulating from the moment your vehicle is seized, so acting quickly significantly reduces the total cost of recovery.
What do I need to bring to the compound?
You will need: your impound insurance certificate, your driving licence, the police seizure notice (Form 3708), your V5C logbook or proof of ownership, a valid MOT certificate or proof of a pre-booked MOT appointment, valid road tax, and proof of address. You will also need to pay the release fee and any storage charges directly to the compound.
What happens if I don't collect my vehicle in time?
If you do not reclaim your vehicle within the deadline, the compound may dispose of it — typically by auction or scrapping. Any outstanding fees and charges will still be owed. Acting quickly is essential to avoid losing the vehicle entirely.
Can I get impound insurance with penalty points?
Yes, in many cases. GoShorty considers drivers with up to 9 penalty points in the last 5 years. Recent claims are also considered. Your quote will reflect your driving history accurately.
Can I get impounded van insurance?
Yes. The policy covers panel vans, box vans, Luton vans, refrigerated vans and pickup trucks as well as cars. Enter your van's registration number above to check eligibility.
Does impound insurance affect my no-claims bonus?
No. Impound insurance is a standalone policy entirely separate from your annual insurance. It does not affect your existing no-claims bonus in any way.
What if I can't afford the compound release fees?
insurd and GoShorty can only provide the insurance element of the process. Release fees and storage charges must be paid directly to the compound. If you're in financial difficulty, Citizens Advice or your local authority may be able to offer guidance.
