A better way to insure your motorhome for the short term
Whether you’re borrowing a friend’s motorhome for a summer trip, lending yours to family while you’re away, or simply need cover for a few days on the road, temporary motorhome insurance gives you exactly the protection you need — without tying you into a 12-month policy.
At insurd, we’re an FCA-regulated specialist insurance broker with over 50 years of experience. For short-term motorhome cover, we work with GoShorty, specialist short-term vehicle insurance providers, to get you fully comprehensive cover in under 2 minutes.
Whether you’re taking the motorhome across the UK or heading to Europe, we make it straightforward to get insured and get on the road.
Fully comprehensive cover
Every temporary motorhome policy is fully comprehensive. That means accidental damage, theft, fire and third party liability are all covered from the moment your policy starts — for both you and the vehicle.
No impact on your no-claims bonus
Because it’s a completely standalone policy, any claim made under your temporary motorhome cover will not affect the no-claims bonus on your annual insurance. The vehicle owner’s policy is protected too.
Cover from 1 to 28 days
Choose the exact duration you need — from a single day up to 28 days. The most competitive rates are available for policies of 1 to 7 days. You only pay for the time you need, and your documents arrive in your inbox immediately after purchase.
What does temporary motorhome insurance cover?
Fully comprehensive cover
All temporary motorhome policies are fully comprehensive. You don’t need to choose a level of cover. Accidental damage, theft, fire and third-party liability are all included.*
Accidental damage
If the motorhome is damaged in an accident, comprehensive cover means the vehicle can be repaired or replaced, regardless of fault.*
Theft and fire
The policy covers loss or damage caused by theft, attempted theft, fire or adverse weather.*
Social, domestic and pleasure use
Temporary motorhome insurance covers social, domestic and pleasure use — holidays, weekend trips, one-off journeys and leisure travel. Please note: commuting and business use are not included on this policy.*
EU and European travel
Third-party cover is included for driving in the EU. Your journey must start and end in the UK. Check the policy terms for full details of countries covered.*
No-claims bonus protected
Because this is a standalone policy, any claim made under your temporary cover will not affect the no-claims bonus on your or the vehicle owner’s main annual policy.*
* Subject to your chosen level of policy cover and GoShorty’s policy terms and conditions.
When do you need temporary motorhome insurance?
Short-term motorhome insurance is the right choice whenever you need cover for a defined period without adjusting an existing annual policy. Here are the most common situations:
Borrowing a motorhome from a friend or family member
Rather than being added to the owner’s annual policy — which can affect their premium and no-claims bonus — a standalone temporary policy means you’re fully covered independently. The owner’s insurance remains untouched.
Lending your motorhome to family or friends
If you want to let someone else take your motorhome out, a temporary policy in their name means your own annual cover and no-claims bonus are protected if they need to make a claim.
A seasonal or one-off trip
If you only use your motorhome occasionally — a few times a year for holidays — temporary insurance on demand can be more cost-effective than maintaining year-round annual cover for a vehicle that sits unused for most of the year.
Driving a newly purchased motorhome home
Just bought a motorhome and need to get it back from the dealer or private seller? A temporary policy covers you immediately while you arrange your permanent annual cover.
Covering a gap between annual policies
If your annual motorhome policy has lapsed or you’re switching providers, temporary cover ensures you’re never uninsured during the transition.
A European motorhome holiday
Planning a trip to France, Spain or further into Europe? The policy includes EU third party cover, as long as your journey starts and ends in the UK.
What is temporary motorhome insurance?
Temporary motorhome insurance — also called short-term motorhome insurance — is a fully comprehensive motor insurance policy covering a motorhome for a defined short period, from 1 day up to 28 days. Unlike an annual policy, you only pay for the exact duration you need, with no long-term commitment.
It works as a completely standalone policy, separate from any existing annual insurance you or the vehicle owner may hold. This means the owner’s no-claims bonus is protected if someone else borrows the motorhome, and your own no-claims bonus is unaffected if you need to make a claim under the temporary policy.
Temporary motorhome insurance is not the same as being added as a named driver on someone’s annual policy. It is a policy in its own right, providing full comprehensive cover — just for a shorter, defined period.
Please note that this policy is for social, domestic and pleasure use only. It does not cover commuting or business use.
Is temporary motorhome insurance the same as temporary car insurance?
No — they are separate products with different eligibility criteria, vehicle requirements and usage restrictions. Temporary car insurance covers standard private cars for social, commuting and business Class 1 use, and is available to drivers aged 19 to 75. Temporary motorhome insurance is specifically underwritten for motorhomes and covers social, domestic and pleasure use only, for drivers aged 30 to 69. Enter your motorhome’s registration above to confirm eligibility and get a quote.
What other types of temporary insurance does insurd offer?
If you need short-term cover for a different vehicle type, insurd arranges the following:
- Temporary campervan insurance — short-term cover for campervans from 1 to 28 days.
- Temporary car insurance — fully comprehensive cover from 1 hour to 28 days.
- Temporary van insurance — comprehensive cover for vans from 1 hour to 28 days, including business use.
- Impounded vehicle insurance – specialist 30-day cover to release your vehicle from a police compound, for cars, vans and more.
If you need longer-term cover, insurd also arranges annual motorhome insurance.
Am I eligible for temporary motorhome insurance?
The eligibility criteria for temporary motorhome insurance are set by the underwriting provider. Please check these carefully before starting your quote, as they differ from the criteria for temporary car insurance.
Driver eligibility
- You must hold a full UK driving licence
- You must be aged 30 to 69
- You must have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 36 months
- Maximum 3 penalty points within the last 3 years
- Maximum 1 insurance claim within the last 3 years
- You must have the permission of the vehicle owner to drive the motorhome
* Please note the driver age range for temporary motorhome insurance is 30–69. This is narrower than our temporary car insurance product (19–75). If you fall outside this range, unfortunately this policy is not available to you.
Vehicle eligibility
- The motorhome must be registered in the UK
- Vehicle value must be between £2,000 and £40,000
- Maximum 7 seats including the driver

How much does temporary motorhome insurance cost?
The cost of temporary motorhome insurance varies depending on the duration of cover, your personal details, driving history, and the motorhome itself. Because it is a specialist short-term product, pricing differs from standard annual motorhome insurance.
Factors that affect the price include:
- Your age — drivers must be between 30 and 69
- Your driving history and any penalty points (maximum 3 points in the last 3 years)
- The value of the motorhome (between £2,000 and £40,000)
- The duration of cover — the most competitive rates are available for policies of 1 to 7 days
- Whether you have made a recent insurance claim (maximum 1 claim in the last 3 years)

Temporary motorhome insurance frequently asked questions
What is temporary motorhome insurance?
Temporary motorhome insurance — also called short-term motorhome insurance — is a fully comprehensive policy covering a motorhome for between 1 and 28 days. It is a standalone policy separate from any annual insurance, arranged through insurd and underwritten via GoShorty.
Can I get temporary motorhome insurance for just 1 day?
Yes. The minimum policy duration is 1 day. One-day motorhome insurance is ideal for a single trip, a day's borrowing, or collecting a recently purchased motorhome. The most competitive rates are available for policies between 1 and 7 days.
Can I borrow someone else's motorhome on a temporary policy?
Yes. Temporary motorhome insurance can be taken out on a vehicle you don't own, provided you have the owner's permission to drive it. The policy is in your name, which means the owner's own insurance and no-claims bonus are fully protected — even if you need to make a claim.
Does temporary motorhome insurance cover business use?
No. This policy covers social, domestic and pleasure use only. It does not cover commuting or any form of business use. If you need a motorhome for commercial purposes, please contact insurd directly to discuss your requirements.
Can I drive my motorhome in Europe on a temporary policy?
Yes. The policy includes EU third party cover, allowing you to drive in Europe. Your journey must start and end in the UK. It is recommended that you carry a copy of your insurance certificate when driving abroad, as it can take up to 7 days for the policy to update on the Motor Insurance Database.
Will a claim affect my no-claims bonus?
No. Because temporary motorhome insurance is a standalone policy, any claim made under it will not affect the no-claims bonus on your existing annual policy. The vehicle owner's no-claims bonus is also unaffected.
What is the age limit for temporary motorhome insurance?
Drivers must be aged between 30 and 69 to be eligible for this policy. This is a GoShorty underwriting requirement specific to the motorhome scheme. If you are outside this age range, unfortunately this policy is not available to you.
How many penalty points can I have?
The maximum accepted is 3 penalty points within the last 3 years. This is stricter than our temporary car insurance product, which accepts up to 9 points over 5 years. If you have more than 3 points in the last 3 years, unfortunately you will not be eligible for this policy.
What is the maximum motorhome value covered?
The motorhome must have a market value of between £2,000 and £40,000. Motorhomes valued above £40,000 are not eligible for this scheme. If your motorhome falls outside this range, please contact insurd to discuss alternative options.
How quickly can I get covered?
Immediately. Once your quote is completed and payment made, your policy documents are emailed to you straight away. The GoShorty quote journey takes under 2 minutes. You can set your cover to start right away or at a future date and time.
What is the difference between a motorhome and a campervan for insurance purposes?
For insurance purposes, a motorhome is typically a purpose-built, coach-built vehicle with integrated living accommodation. A campervan is generally a van or other vehicle that has been converted to include sleeping and living facilities. insurd offers separate temporary insurance pages for motorhomes and campervans. If you are insuring a campervan, please visit our temporary campervan insurance page.
Can I extend my temporary motorhome insurance?
If you need cover for longer than originally planned, you can take out a new policy for the additional period. The GoShorty quote journey takes under 2 minutes so extending your cover is quick and straightforward. Note that the maximum single policy duration is 28 days. Alternatively, we offer full annual motorhome insurance policies.
